A rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or chronic ankle joint instability are injuries that can significantly limit daily functioning. If after twisting your knee or ankle you feel the joint "giving way", lack of confidence when walking, or difficulty returning to sport, we invite you to an orthopaedic consultation at OpenMed in Warsaw or Płock. Our specialists assess the degree of damage and help decide whether conservative treatment or qualification for ligament reconstruction is indicated.

The anterior cruciate ligament stabilises the knee and controls rotational movements. Its rupture most commonly occurs during a sudden change in running direction, landing after a jump, or direct injury. The ankle ligaments are usually damaged as a result of a sprained ankle. In the case of complete rupture, permanent instability may occur, which over time increases the risk of cartilage damage and degenerative changes.

Symptoms and when to seek a consultation

Not every ligament injury requires surgery. However, accurate recognition of the degree of instability is essential. Symptoms that should prompt an orthopaedic consultation include:

  • a feeling of instability or the knee or ankle "giving way",
  • recurring ankle sprains,
  • pain and swelling persisting despite rehabilitation,
  • difficulty returning to sporting activity or physical work.

If the joint does not regain stability despite conservative treatment, our orthopaedic doctors at OpenMed may consider further management, including qualification for ligament reconstruction surgery.

What does an orthopaedic consultation at OpenMed involve?

The visit begins with a detailed interview about the mechanism of injury, previous treatment and the patient's activity level. Our specialists then perform a clinical examination, assessing joint stability, range of motion and muscle strength.

Imaging studies are of key importance. MRI allows confirmation of cruciate ligament rupture or ankle ligament damage, as well as assessment of any concomitant meniscus, cartilage or bone structure injuries. Based on the complete clinical picture, the doctor presents possible treatment options and discusses indications for potential reconstruction.

Treatment plan and further management

After the consultation, the patient receives a clear action plan. In some cases, it is possible to continue conservative treatment with intensive rehabilitation and orthopaedic monitoring. However, if instability persists and limits daily functioning, the doctor may propose qualification for ligament reconstruction surgery at a specialised centre.

The visit also covers issues related to preparation for any potential surgery, the type of graft, recovery time and rehabilitation plan. This allows the patient to make an informed decision, understanding both the benefits and potential risks of surgical treatment.

Rehabilitation and follow-up

Regardless of the chosen treatment method, rehabilitation plays a key role in regaining joint stability. At OpenMed, we also provide orthopaedic follow-up after injury, rehabilitation support and monitoring of therapy progress. The goal is a safe return to activity and reducing the risk of re-injury.

If you have suffered a cruciate ligament rupture or are struggling with chronic ankle instability, book an orthopaedic consultation at OpenMed Warsaw or Płock.

FAQ - Ligament reconstruction

1. Does a torn cruciate ligament always require surgery?

Not always. The decision depends on the degree of instability, age, activity level and the patient's expectations. Some people can function well after conservative treatment.

2. What tests are needed before qualifying for ACL reconstruction?

An MRI of the knee or ankle joint and an orthopaedic examination assessing joint stability are most commonly required.

3. How long does recovery take after cruciate ligament reconstruction?

Return to full sporting activity usually takes 6 to 9 months and requires systematic rehabilitation.

4. Can chronic ankle instability lead to degenerative changes?

Yes, persistent instability can contribute to cartilage overload and accelerate the development of degenerative changes, so it is worth consulting an orthopaedist.
