A damaged meniscus is one of the most common causes of knee pain, both in physically active individuals and in patients after everyday injuries. If you are experiencing pain, knee locking or recurring swelling, we invite you to OpenMed in Warsaw and Płock. We offer comprehensive diagnostics and meniscus injury treatment with a clear management plan and individually tailored rehabilitation.
The menisci are two crescent-shaped structures made of fibrocartilaginous tissue, located in the knee joint between the femur and the tibia. Their role is to absorb loads, stabilise the knee and protect articular cartilage. From a medical perspective, meniscus damage involves tearing, partial rupture or degenerative delamination. It can be acute and post-traumatic, or develop gradually as a result of degenerative changes.
Causes and symptoms of meniscus injury
Damage most commonly occurs during a sudden twist of the knee with the foot firmly planted on the ground, a dynamic change of direction or a loaded squat. In sport, typical injuries occur during football, basketball or skiing. In individuals over 40, damage may be related to the natural weakening of the meniscus structure and degenerative changes.
Symptoms depend on the type and extent of the tear. Most commonly, pain appears on the inner or outer side of the knee, along with swelling, a catching sensation and limited range of motion. Joint locking — difficulty fully extending the knee — is characteristic. If symptoms persist despite rest and pain management, an orthopaedic consultation is necessary.
Diagnostics at OpenMed
Meniscus treatment in Warsaw and Płock begins with a thorough interview and orthopaedic examination. Our specialists assess knee stability, range of motion and perform clinical tests to identify suspected meniscus damage. To confirm the diagnosis, an MRI is most commonly ordered, which allows assessment of the type of tear and any accompanying injuries, such as ligament or cartilage damage.
An accurate diagnosis allows the selection of the optimal treatment method. Not every injury requires surgery, and the decision depends on the patient's age, physical activity and the nature of the changes.
Meniscus injury treatment
At OpenMed, the therapy plan is determined individually. In many cases, conservative treatment is possible, including knee off-loading, anti-inflammatory treatment and rehabilitation aimed at strengthening the muscles that stabilise the joint. The goal is to reduce pain and improve knee function without surgical intervention.
However, if joint locking, a large tear or persistent instability occurs, our doctors may qualify the patient for surgical treatment in the form of knee arthroscopy. Depending on the type of damage, meniscus suturing or removal of the damaged fragment while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible may be performed.
Treatment may include:
- conservative treatment with individual rehabilitation,
- arthroscopic meniscus suturing for the appropriate type of tear,
- partial resection of the damaged fragment when repair is not possible.
Rehabilitation and return to activity
Rehabilitation is a key element of meniscus injury treatment. The exercise programme is individually selected and adapted to the healing stage. It includes improving range of motion, strengthening thigh muscles and learning correct movement patterns. The time to return to full activity depends on the type of injury and the chosen treatment method.
Rehabilitation specialists at OpenMed work closely with orthopaedic doctors, allowing for proper planning of the treatment process and increasing the effectiveness of the return to full mobility.
If you are experiencing knee pain, have suffered a sports injury or suspect a meniscus tear, book a consultation at OpenMed Warsaw or OpenMed Płock.
