Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that can lead to progressive joint damage and reduced mobility. If you experience persistent pain in the hands, wrists or other joints and notice morning stiffness, it is worth consulting a doctor. At OpenMed in Warsaw and Płock we provide comprehensive RA diagnostics and treatment, with an individual therapy plan and regular monitoring of outcomes.

RA is an autoimmune disease. The immune system begins attacking the body's own tissues - primarily the synovial membrane lining the joints. This leads to chronic inflammation, swelling, pain and progressive destruction of cartilage and bone. Untreated RA can cause permanent joint deformities, which is why early diagnosis and prompt treatment initiation are of key importance.

Symptoms and when to see a doctor

RA most commonly develops gradually. Symptoms may initially be subtle but persist and increase. The most typical include:

  • symmetrical pain and swelling of small joints of the hands and feet,
  • morning stiffness lasting longer than 30-60 minutes,
  • fatigue and general weakness,
  • reduced range of motion and decreased grip strength.

If symptoms persist for several weeks, worsen or recur despite using painkillers, it is not worth delaying a visit. In RA, time has a real impact on prognosis.

Diagnostics at OpenMed

The consultation begins with a detailed history and joint examination. Our doctors assess the presence of swelling, tenderness on pressure, range of motion and limb function. In the next stage, laboratory tests are ordered, including inflammatory markers (CRP, ESR) and antibodies characteristic of RA, such as rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-CCP.

Depending on the clinical picture, we perform imaging studies, most commonly joint ultrasound, which can detect active inflammation even at an early stage of the disease, as well as X-rays to assess possible structural changes. An accurate diagnosis enables determination of disease activity and selection of appropriate treatment.

RA treatment and therapy plan at OpenMed

Rheumatoid arthritis treatment is based on the "treat-to-target" principle, i.e. aiming for disease remission or the lowest possible activity. The basis of therapy is disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), which inhibit the inflammatory process and limit the progression of joint damage. If basic treatment does not bring sufficient improvement, biological therapy or modern targeted therapies may be introduced.

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications are supportive and are used in accordance with current guidelines. Rehabilitation is equally important - appropriately selected exercises help maintain range of motion, strengthen muscles and reduce the risk of secondary contractures. Rehabilitation is also available at OpenMed facilities.

Ongoing monitoring and treatment safety

RA is a chronic disease and therefore requires regular follow-up visits. We monitor disease activity, treatment effectiveness and any medication side effects. If necessary, we modify therapy to maintain the best possible control over inflammation.

If you suspect rheumatoid arthritis or already have a diagnosed RA and need specialist care, book an appointment at OpenMed Warsaw or Płock.
