Cervical canal culture

Bacteriological testing from the cervical canal aims to detect the presence of bacteria in the cervical canal. As a rule, this canal should be free of any microorganisms. However, under certain circumstances, bacteria can penetrate into the canal, which can lead to various consequences, particularly risky for pregnant women. Asymptomatic cervical infections can contribute to premature births.

In some cases, for example before testing fallopian tube patency, such a culture is required. This test is also used for recurring vaginal infections.

The procedure is painless: after inserting a speculum into the vagina, a swab is taken with a sterile cotton swab and placed on a medium that preserves the microorganisms until the sample is delivered to the bacteriological laboratory.

GBS culture

Culture for the presence of group B beta-hemolytic streptococcus (GBS) GBS is a bacterium that can occur in the lower part of the reproductive tract in some women, usually not causing symptoms in them. During pregnancy, the presence of this bacterium also usually does not cause symptoms in the mother, but can be a threat to the child.

Until delivery, the child is protected by the fetal membranes, but during passage through the birth canal, infection can occur. Newborns are particularly susceptible in the first days of life, and GBS infection can lead to severe sepsis.

To prevent this, it is necessary to detect the presence of GBS in the reproductive tract. For this purpose, a swab is taken between the 35th and 37th week of pregnancy from the vagina and anus, which is then sent to a bacteriological laboratory. A negative culture result excludes the risk, but in the case of a positive result, this is not a cause for concern.

GBS infections are not treated directly, but it is necessary to inform the doctor about this when admitted to the hospital for delivery. Then, during delivery, prophylactic antibiotic therapy (usually ampicillin) is administered every 4 hours to minimize the risk of infection in the child.
