Colposcopy is one of the most important gynecological examinations that allows early detection of precancerous and cancerous changes of the cervix. It is a precise, painless and non-invasive diagnostic method, recommended in case of abnormal cytology results or presence of HPV virus.

At OpenMed Medical Centre in Warsaw, colposcopy is performed by dr n. med. Adriana Pawłowska – an experienced gynecology specialist with extensive clinical experience.

What is colposcopy?

Colposcopy is an examination involving viewing the cervix, vagina and vulva using a colposcope – a specialized optical device with magnification. Thanks to colposcopy, the doctor can accurately assess changes that are invisible to the naked eye and, if necessary, collect material for further tests (biopsy).

This examination allows detection of:

  • changes related to HPV virus,
  • inflammation and erosions,
  • abnormal cells that may indicate precancerous changes,
  • cervical cancer in early stage.

When is it worth having colposcopy performed?

Colposcopy is indicated especially when:

  • cytology result is abnormal (e.g., ASC-US, LSIL, HSIL),
  • there is a positive HPV test result,
  • the doctor notices changes in the appearance of the cervix during routine examination,
  • there are concerning symptoms, such as bleeding between periods, after intercourse or discharge with unusual smell and color,
  • the patient has previously had treated cervical changes and requires follow-up.

How is a colposcopic examination performed?

The examination is performed during a standard gynecological consultation. For the patient, its course is similar to an examination using a speculum. The colposcope does not touch the body – it is positioned in front of the examination chair and allows the cervix to be examined in magnification.

During the examination, diagnostic reagents are used, such as acetic acid or Lugol’s solution. They facilitate the identification of areas that differ in structure from normal epithelium. This makes a very precise assessment of lesions possible.

The entire procedure takes several minutes and in most cases is well tolerated.

Is colposcopy painful?

Colposcopy itself is not a painful examination. Patients may experience discomfort related to the insertion of the speculum, similar to that experienced during a Pap smear.

If, during the examination, it is necessary to take a biopsy sample, a brief, localized prick or a sensation of cramping may occur. The procedure is very short and usually does not require anesthesia. Discomfort after the biopsy is generally mild and temporary.

How to prepare for colposcopy?

Preparation for colposcopy is simple:

  • it is best to perform the examination between the 7th and 12th day of the cycle (i.e., after menstruation ends),
  • 24–48 hours before the examination, you should not have intercourse, use vaginal medications or perform douching,
  • it is worth having previous cytology and HPV test results with you.

  • Comfort and safety – intimate atmosphere, modern equipment and friendly approach.
  • Possibility of further diagnostics or treatment on-site.
