What is emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception, commonly called the "morning-after pill", is a form of protection used after unprotected sexual intercourse or in case of failure of the current contraceptive method (e.g., broken condom, missed hormonal pill, dislodged intrauterine device).

Its purpose is to prevent fertilization or implantation of the egg – it does not terminate an existing pregnancy, but only delays or prevents ovulation.

When should the "morning-after pill" be used?

The sooner it is taken, the greater its effectiveness. Best:

within 72 hours (3 days) of intercourse – in the case of a preparation with levonorgestrel
within 120 hours (5 days) – in the case of a preparation containing ulipristal acetate
