What is emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception, commonly called the "morning-after pill", is a form of protection used after unprotected sexual intercourse or in case of failure of the current contraceptive method (e.g., broken condom, missed hormonal pill, dislodged intrauterine device).

Its purpose is to prevent fertilization or implantation of the egg – it does not terminate an existing pregnancy, but only delays or prevents ovulation.

When should the "morning-after pill" be used?

The sooner it is taken, the greater its effectiveness. Best:

  • within 72 hours (3 days) of intercourse – in the case of a preparation with levonorgestrel
  • within 120 hours (5 days) – in the case of a preparation containing ulipristal acetate

Why is it worth consulting a doctor?

Although in many cases emergency contraception is available without a prescription, consultation with a gynecologist is strongly recommended, especially when:

  • you are in a cycle that is difficult to assess unambiguously,
  • you are taking other medications that may affect the effectiveness of the preparation,
  • you want to discuss further contraception to avoid similar situations in the future,
  • you have comorbidities, hormonal disorders or previous gynecological problems.

At OpenMed, we provide quick and discreet help – also in urgent mode.

What does the consultation look like?

During a short visit, the doctor will:

  • conduct a medical interview,
  • determine the phase of the cycle and the risk of fertilization,
  • advise on the best preparation and its dosage,
  • discuss possible side effects,
  • propose effective solutions for the future.

If necessary, it is also possible to order a gynecological examination or ultrasound.

Is emergency contraception safe?

Yes, however it should not be used regularly – this is a temporary solution that does not replace classic methods of contraception. Preparations may affect the menstrual cycle, causing its shift or intensification of hormonal symptoms.
