Fiberoscopy at OpenMed – Warsaw and Płock

Fiberoscopy is a modern, precise method of ENT diagnostics that allows assessment of the upper respiratory tract using a thin, flexible endoscope. This examination enables detailed viewing of the nose, throat, larynx, and part of the trachea and is indispensable in diagnosing many otolaryngological conditions.

At OpenMed Medical Centre, fiberoscopy is performed both in Warsaw (Wola, Wschowska 8 St.) and in Płock (Medyczna 8 St.) by experienced otorhinolaryngology specialists.

What is fiberoscopy?

Fiberoscopy is an endoscopic examination that involves inserting a thin, flexible fiber optic cable (fiberscope) through the nose or mouth to assess the interior of the upper respiratory tract. The image from the camera is transmitted to a screen in real-time, allowing the physician to precisely evaluate the condition of the mucosa and any abnormalities.

Fiberoscopy is safe, takes only a few minutes, and usually doesn't require general anesthesia – if needed, local anesthesia in the form of a spray is used.

When should fiberoscopy be performed?

The examination is recommended in cases of:

  • chronic hoarseness, cough, or feeling of a foreign body in the throat,
  • recurrent nasal and sinus infections,
  • nosebleeds of unknown cause,
  • difficulty swallowing or breathing,
  • suspected polyps, tumors, or other changes in the larynx and throat,
  • monitoring changes after surgical procedures (e.g., removal of tonsils, tumors),
  • diagnosis of sleep apnea and voice disorders.

How is fiberoscopy performed?

Fiberoscopy is performed in a sitting position. The doctor inserts a thin fiberscope – a flexible tube with a camera – through the nose or mouth and carefully examines the nasopharynx, larynx, throat, and entrance to the esophagus. The examination is non-invasive, and thanks to modern imaging technology, it is very precise.

The entire procedure usually takes 5-10 minutes, and the patient can return to daily activities almost immediately after completion.

How to prepare for a fibroscopic examination?

Fiberoscopy doesn't require special preparation. However, it's advisable to:

  • avoid consuming meals directly before the examination (1-2 hours earlier),
  • inform the doctor about allergies, asthma, blood clotting disorders, or medications taken,
  • bring previous ENT examination results (if available).
