Heart ultrasound (echocardiography) Warsaw – OpenMed Wola and Praga
Heart ultrasound (echocardiography, echo) is a non-invasive, painless imaging examination that evaluates heart structure and function in real time. Using Doppler technology, it allows assessment of blood flow and severity of potential valve defects. The examination is safe (no radiation) and can also be performed in pregnant women.
What does heart echo evaluate?
- size and structure of heart chambers, contractility (including ejection fraction – EF), wall motion,
- valves (stenosis/insufficiency) – with Doppler assessment,
- pericardium (e.g., fluid in pericardium),
- pulmonary artery pressure, right/left ventricular overload,
- initial segment of ascending aorta and openings of large vessels.
When is it worth getting a heart ultrasound?
- shortness of breath, decreased exercise capacity, leg swelling, fainting/dizziness,
- heart palpitations, "skipped beats", arrhythmias; heart murmurs,
- chest pain/pressure (after excluding emergencies),
- arterial hypertension, diabetes, thyroid diseases, dyslipidemia,
- monitoring/suspicion of: heart failure, cardiomyopathy, valve defects, changes after myocarditis/pericarditis,
- heart assessment before procedures or as part of treatment monitoring.
Important: in case of sudden, severe chest pain, worsening shortness of breath, stroke symptoms – call 112/Emergency Department. These situations are not diagnosed on an outpatient basis.
How does heart ultrasound examination look like at OpenMed?
At OpenMed, we ensure that heart ultrasound examination is not only accurate but also comfortable for the patient. The entire process takes place in a friendly atmosphere, and thanks to modern equipment and our specialists' experience, you receive reliable results during your visit.
- You lie on your left side/back; the doctor applies the ultrasound probe to your chest (applied gel facilitates imaging).
- Duration usually 20–30 minutes.
- After the examination, the doctor discusses the conclusions and – if necessary – suggests further diagnostics/treatment.
Preparation for heart echo
- No special preparation required. Eat and take medications as usual (unless the doctor advises otherwise).
- Bring: previous results (ECG/echo, blood tests, discharge summaries), medication list.
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows quick access to the chest.
Safety and limitations
- The examination is safe and can be repeated.
- In some people, imaging may be more difficult (e.g., obesity, pulmonary emphysema) – then the doctor will indicate alternatives (e.g., transesophageal/contrast echo or additional tests at a reference center).
