Pediatric Gastroenterology Warsaw
Pediatric gastroenterology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of digestive system diseases in infants, children and adolescents. It covers disorders of the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, bile ducts and pancreas, taking into account the specificity of developmental age (growth, nutrition, immunity).
When to take your child to a gastroenterologist?
It is worth planning a visit if you observe the following in your child:
- chronic abdominal pain (including night pain), recurring bloating,
- diarrhea or constipation lasting >2 weeks,
- persistent heartburn, burning in the esophagus, "reflux" of food content,
- nausea, vomiting (especially with blood/bile),
- blood or mucus in stool, tarry stools,
- lack of appetite, food selectivity, feeding difficulties in infants,
- unexplained weight loss or lack of growth on percentile charts,
- frequent spitting up/GER in infants, colic with accompanying worrying symptoms,
- suspected food allergy or intolerance (e.g. lactose, cow's milk protein),
- chronic fatigue, pallor, anemia of unclear cause.
Urgent contact/emergency room when the following occur: severe, increasing abdominal pain with abdominal rigidity, signs of dehydration (drowsiness, no tears, little urine), bloody vomiting or significant blood in stool, high fever with severe abdominal pain, sudden weight loss.
What does a visit to a pediatric gastroenterologist at OpenMed in Warsaw look like?
Initially, the doctor at our OpenMed Medical Centre conducts a detailed interview with the caregiver and child (diet, bowel rhythm, past diseases, previous treatment, growth rate), requests access to health records and test results. Then performs a physical examination, with particular attention to the abdominal cavity and assessment of hydration and nutritional status.
If necessary, orders further diagnostics, e.g.:
- blood tests (including morphology, CRP, liver parameters, celiac disease) and stool tests (including calprotectin),
- abdominal ultrasound,
- breath tests (e.g. for lactose intolerance/SIBO),
- dietary consultations and elimination-provocation trials,
- endoscopy (gastroscopy/colonoscopy) — performed in children under anesthesia when indicated.
The doctor may also suggest diet modification and pharmacological treatment appropriate for the child's age and body weight.
What conditions does a pediatric gastroenterologist treat?
- gastroesophageal reflux (GER/GERD) in infants and children,
- chronic abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS),
- constipation, chronic diarrhea, SIBO,
- inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis),
- celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity,
- food allergies and intolerances (e.g. lactose, cow's milk proteins),
- gastrointestinal infections, H. pylori,
- liver and bile duct diseases (including elevated liver enzymes, NAFLD),
- pancreatic diseases,
- nutritional disorders and deficiencies resulting from gastrointestinal diseases.
How to prepare your child for the first visit to a gastroenterologist?
- bring health records, list of medications/supplements, recent test results,
- note: frequency and nature of bowel movements, occurrence of pain, products that worsen symptoms,
- for infants, a feeding and stool diary from recent days is useful.
