At OpenMed Medical Centre we offer comprehensive diagnostics and treatment of eyelid lesions, both conservative and surgical.

We provide quick consultation appointments, experience in treating eyelid lesions, and the option to perform the procedure on site. We see patients at our facilities in Warsaw and in Płock.

Thanks to this, in many cases a problem that has persisted for weeks can be resolved during a single visit.

Stye as the most common cause of a lump on the eyelid

A stye is an acute bacterial inflammation of the eyelid glands. It usually develops suddenly, sometimes within a single day. Typical symptoms include a painful lump on the eyelid, redness, swelling, and tenderness on touch. A feeling of eye irritation and tearing also often appears.

In many cases, a stye resolves on its own within a few days. Conservative treatment is helpful, including warm compresses, proper eyelid hygiene, and topical treatment. However, if the lesion does not disappear or recurs, it may transform into a chalazion.

A lump on the eyelid - what could it be?

A lump on the eyelid is one of the more common ophthalmological complaints. It usually starts inconspicuously as a small thickening, slight redness, or feeling of discomfort. For many patients, it is a minor problem that should pass on its own.

In most cases, it is indeed not a dangerous lesion. It is worth knowing, however, that not every lump on the eyelid disappears spontaneously and not every one should be ignored. If the lesion persists longer, enlarges, or recurs, an ophthalmological consultation and appropriate treatment are required.

Chalazion as a chronic lump on the eyelid

A chalazion is a chronic lesion that develops more slowly than a stye but persists much longer. It most often takes the form of a hard, painless lump that lasts for many weeks and does not disappear despite home treatment.

It arises from blockage of the Meibomian glands and chronic inflammation. Unlike a stye, it rarely resolves on its own. With larger lesions, it can cause discomfort and affect vision quality.

Treatment of stye and chalazion - methods available at OpenMed

Conservative treatment

In the initial phase, treatment includes warm compresses, hygiene of the eyelid margins, and topical treatment. This approach is particularly effective for a stye.

Surgical treatment of chalazion

If the lesion persists for several weeks and does not respond to treatment, removal may be necessary. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, takes about a dozen or so minutes, and does not require hospitalisation. It is a quick and effective treatment method that allows the lesion to be removed almost immediately.

Other eyelid lesions

Not every lump on the eyelid is inflammatory. Diagnostics also takes into account xanthelasma, papillomas, fibromas, and other benign skin lesions. Although usually not dangerous, they may require removal for aesthetic or diagnostic reasons.

Ophthalmological consultation for chalazion and stye at OpenMed - when to see an ophthalmologist?

An ophthalmological consultation is recommended if the lump does not disappear within several weeks, enlarges, recurs in the same place, or causes discomfort. Early diagnosis allows effective treatment to be selected and a chronic problem to be avoided.

Most frequently asked patient questions about stye and chalazion

Not always. It often resolves on its own. However, if it does not disappear or recurs, it is worth consulting a doctor.

Rarely. In most cases it requires treatment, and often a procedure.

No. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and takes about a dozen or so minutes.

No. This may aggravate the inflammation and prolong treatment.

In the case of the procedure, the effect is immediate, since the lesion is removed during a single visit.

Yes, especially in people prone to Meibomian gland dysfunction. Regular eyelid margin hygiene and proper care of the area around the eyes reduce the risk of recurrence.
