Otoscopy is a basic ENT examination that allows the external ear canal and the eardrum to be assessed. It is quick, painless and is one of the most important elements of the diagnosis of ear diseases. If you experience ear pain, hearing impairment, a feeling of fullness or recurrent infections, it is worth consulting an ENT specialist. At OpenMed in Warsaw and OpenMed in Płock we perform otoscopic examinations in children and adults, providing a thorough assessment of the condition of the ear and a discussion of further management.

Otoscopy makes it possible to assess structures that are not visible during an ordinary physical examination. Thanks to it, the doctor can detect inflammation, the presence of earwax, damage to the eardrum, foreign bodies and other abnormalities affecting hearing and the patient's comfort. The examination is often the first step in the diagnosis of ENT conditions and helps make a decision about further treatment.

When is it worth having an otoscopy?

An ear examination by an ENT specialist is performed both in the case of acute complaints and during the monitoring of chronic health problems. In many situations, the otoscopic examination alone makes it possible to establish the cause of the symptoms and start appropriate treatment.

The most common indications for performing an otoscopy include:

  • ear pain or a feeling of pressure in the ear,
  • hearing impairment or sudden blockage of the ear,
  • suspicion of inflammation of the external or middle ear,
  • tinnitus, discharge from the ear or dizziness,
  • suspicion of the presence of a foreign body or an excessive amount of earwax.

Otoscopy is also often performed in children, especially with recurrent upper respiratory tract infections and suspicion of middle ear inflammation.

What does the otoscopic examination at OpenMed look like?

During the visit, the ENT specialist takes a history concerning the reported symptoms, their duration and the treatment so far. They then perform the examination using an otoscope - a special device equipped with a light source and an optical system that enables a detailed view of the inside of the ear canal.

The examination usually takes a few minutes. The doctor gently inserts the tip of the otoscope into the ear and assesses the condition of the ear canal and the eardrum. The patient may feel slight discomfort related to the manipulation within the ear, however the examination should not cause pain.

In the case of children, otoscopy is performed with particular care and in a manner adapted to the age of the young patient. We take care to ensure a calm atmosphere during the visit in order to reduce the stress related to the examination.

What can be detected during otoscopy?

The examination makes it possible to diagnose many ENT conditions. Most often these are acute and chronic ear inflammations, residual earwax, perforations of the eardrum and post-traumatic changes. Otoscopy also makes it possible to assess the presence of fluid in the middle ear, which may cause hearing impairment, especially in children.

Depending on the result of the examination, the doctor may recommend pharmacological treatment, cleaning of the ear canal, performing additional hearing tests or further ENT diagnosis. Thanks to this, the patient receives a specific management plan already during a single visit.

ENT diagnosis at OpenMed

The otoscopic examination is often an element of broader ENT diagnosis. If necessary, the doctor can extend the diagnosis to include an assessment of the nose, throat, larynx and hearing tests. Such a thorough approach makes it possible to accurately establish the cause of the complaints and select appropriate treatment.
