Lung Ultrasound at OpenMed Warsaw and Płock
Lung ultrasound is a modern, safe and non-invasive imaging examination that allows assessment of the lung parenchyma and pleura in real time. Although X-ray examinations and computed tomography were the basis of diagnostics for years, chest ultrasonography now finds wide application, especially in assessing inflammatory conditions, dyspnoea or pleural effusion. At OpenMed in Warsaw and Płock we perform lung ultrasound in adults and adolescents during pulmonology consultations, providing rapid diagnostics without radiation exposure.
The examination uses ultrasonic waves that reflect off internal structures and create an image visible on the monitor. Unlike X-ray, ultrasound can be repeated multiple times, which is important in monitoring the course of disease. This is particularly useful in patients with respiratory tract infections, suspected pneumonia or exacerbation of chronic diseases.
When is lung ultrasound recommended
Lung ultrasound in Warsaw and Płock is worth considering when respiratory symptoms appear or when monitoring of an already diagnosed condition is needed. Our doctors refer for the examination in the case of:
- dyspnoea and rapid breathing,
- persistent cough and chest pain,
- suspected pneumonia or post-infection complications,
- suspected pleural effusion,
- monitoring of heart failure with suspected pulmonary congestion.
In many situations, ultrasound examination can quickly confirm or exclude the presence of inflammatory changes, subpleural changes or pleural effusion, which facilitates treatment decisions during the visit.

What does lung ultrasound look like at OpenMed?
The examination does not require special preparation. The patient exposes the chest, and the doctor applies the gel-covered ultrasound probe to the skin. The image of pulmonary and pleural structures is visible in real time. We assess the presence of so-called B-lines, inflammatory consolidations, pleural irregularities and pleural effusion.
Lung ultrasound usually takes about fifteen minutes and is painless. After the examination, the doctor discusses the result and, if needed, proposes further diagnostics or treatment. At OpenMed in Warsaw and Płock it is possible to coordinate an internal medicine or pulmonology consultation within the same facility.
What does lung ultrasound provide and what are its limitations?
Lung ultrasound is particularly useful in assessing changes located near the pleura. It can detect even small amounts of fluid and inflammatory changes that may sometimes be difficult to identify on auscultation. It is a safe examination, including for pregnant women.
However, it should be remembered that ultrasonography does not replace computed tomography in assessing deep pulmonary structures. If necessary, our doctors refer for further examinations if the clinical picture requires it.
