Thyroid Ultrasound at OpenMed Warsaw and Płock
Thyroid ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging examination that allows assessment of the size, structure and composition of the thyroid gland. It is one of the basic examinations used in the diagnosis of thyroid diseases, such as thyroid nodules, goitre, thyroiditis or suspected neoplastic changes. If you notice neck enlargement, a feeling of pressure in the throat, hormonal disorders or abnormal TSH results, we invite you for thyroid ultrasound at OpenMed in Warsaw or Płock. We perform the examination on site, without a long wait, with a report and discussion of the result immediately after the visit.
The thyroid is a small gland located at the front of the neck that produces hormones regulating metabolism, heart function, body temperature and many other processes. Disorders of its functioning can lead to hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism or focal changes within the parenchyma. Ultrasound does not directly assess hormone levels, but allows precise visualisation of the organ's structure and detection of abnormalities requiring further diagnostics.
When is thyroid ultrasound recommended?
The examination is recommended in cases of abnormal laboratory test results (TSH, FT3, FT4), palpable nodules in the neck area, thyroid enlargement, a feeling of pressure when swallowing, and for monitoring previously diagnosed changes. Our specialists also refer for ultrasound in cases of suspected thyroiditis, including Hashimoto's disease, and for monitoring hormonal treatment.
Thyroid ultrasound is also performed preventively in individuals with a family history of thyroid diseases or after radiotherapy to the neck area.

What does thyroid ultrasound at OpenMed involve?
The examination is painless and usually takes around 15 minutes. The patient lies on their back with their head slightly tilted, and the doctor applies a gel-covered ultrasound transducer to the neck. The thyroid image is displayed in real time on a monitor, allowing assessment of its size, echogenicity and the presence of nodules or cysts.
During the examination, the following are assessed:
- the size of the thyroid lobes and isthmus,
- parenchymal structure (homogeneous or heterogeneous),
- the presence and nature of focal changes,
- vascularisation in Doppler examination,
- adjacent lymph nodes.
The result is discussed immediately after the examination. If we find changes requiring further assessment, our doctors will explain whether follow-up, an endocrinology consultation or fine-needle biopsy is necessary.
What does thyroid ultrasound provide?
Thyroid ultrasound allows early detection of changes that do not always produce clinical symptoms. It enables differentiation of benign nodules from changes requiring further diagnostics and assessment of the progression of inflammatory diseases. The examination is safe, can be repeated multiple times and requires no special preparation.
At OpenMed in Warsaw and Płock, we combine the ultrasound examination with the possibility of further diagnostics and specialist consultation. This way, the patient receives a coherent management plan without needing to seek subsequent stages of treatment at different locations.
