Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, recurrent inflammatory disease that affects both children and adults. Atopic skin is dry, prone to irritation and reacts inappropriately to contact with allergens and irritants.

At OpenMed in Warsaw, we help patients with AD diagnosis, as well as effectively controlling symptoms, minimizing exacerbations and restoring the natural protective barrier of the skin. AD most often develops in people with an atopic predisposition, but its course is individual and depends on many factors.

Atopic dermatitis and eczema: effective treatment and care

In AD therapy, the combination of proper care, anti-inflammatory treatment and elimination of triggering factors is crucial. Each patient requires an individually tailored plan that takes into account age, severity of lesions, frequency of exacerbations and provoking environmental factors. At OpenMed Medical Centre in Warsaw, we create treatment protocols for atopic dermatitis that not only alleviate current symptoms but also extend periods of remission.

What are the typical symptoms of atopic dermatitis?

The most common symptoms are dryness, itching, redness and scaling of the skin. During exacerbations, oozing, papules, cracks and superinfections appear. In adults, lesions are often located on the hands, neck, face and joint flexures. In children, cheeks, trunk and knee flexures are particularly typical. It is important to understand what atopic dermatitis looks like at different stages, as the dynamics of changes affect treatment selection.

What does diagnosis involve at OpenMed in Warsaw?

The diagnostic process begins with a detailed history and clinical assessment of the skin.

  1. The dermatologist analyzes the appearance of lesions, their distribution, frequency of exacerbations and factors that may affect deterioration.
  2. If allergy is suspected, the doctor may order skin tests or blood tests, such as total and specific IgE.
  3. In more difficult cases, dermoscopy is used, which allows assessment of the structure of lesions and exclusion of other dermatological diseases.

The goal of AD diagnosis is to determine the causes of exacerbations and select therapy that will be effective and safe.

AD treatment: emollients, anti-inflammatory medications and phototherapy

The basis of treatment is emollients that restore the hydrolipid barrier. They are used regularly several times a day. During exacerbations, the dermatologist may recommend topical glucocorticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors, which reduce inflammation. In patients with more severe course, UVB 311 nm phototherapy may be effective. Treatment is conducted under constant medical supervision to achieve the best therapeutic effect and limit the risk of adverse effects.

Atopic skin care

Atopic skin requires gentle treatment. It is recommended to use mild cleansing preparations without detergents and to moisturize the skin immediately after bathing. In daily care, cosmetics with alcohol, artificial fragrances or preservatives should be avoided. Short, lukewarm baths, gentle skin drying and regular use of emollients are the basis for preventing exacerbations.

Allergens and triggering factors: how to recognize and limit them?

Factors that most often exacerbate AD include inhalant allergens, animal dander, detergents, sweat, stress, cold air and woolen clothing. It is important to observe skin reactions and identify situations in which deterioration occurs. At our OpenMed Medical Centre in Warsaw, we help identify potential triggers of the disease and discuss effective ways to limit them in daily life.

How to prepare for a visit to a dermatologist at OpenMed and what to pay attention to?

Before the visit, it is worth preparing a list of cosmetics and medications used and taking photos of skin lesions from periods of exacerbation. If symptoms appear after contact with cosmetics or specific products, it is good to mention this during the interview. The more information you gather, the easier it will be for the doctor to determine the cause of the problem and plan treatment.
